CREATING GLOBAL PUBLIC DISCOURSE / MAKING IT PLAIN

The theme of this blog is inspired by one of the 20th century’s most dynamic and committed Muslim activists, Malcolm X, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. I continue to be impressed by Malcolm’s knowledge and understanding of global social and political affairs and the extraordinary way in which he explained them.  He was a master at breaking down complex ideas and thoughts so that the average person could understand them.  Before my conversion / reversion to Islam I remember hanging out in the poolrooms, shoe shine parlors and barbershops of many cities engaged in various forms of “hustling” (some of you know what I am talking about).

We would be dropping science, i.e., arguing and  debating about topics such as the Bandung Conference, Patrice Lumumba, the Organization of African Unity, and the United Nations.  We were introduced to these topics by Brother Malcolm who made it a personal mandate to “Make It Plain.”  Can you imagine, street hustlers debating about the Non-Aligned Movement.   Malcolm became the prism through which we viewed and understood the world.   Thus, it is my intention to attempt to continue his legacy by constructing a lens through which to view, interpret, and make more intelligible this complex, globalized,  and often hazardous world that we live in.  May Allah guide me and accept this endeavor.
